Who’s That Girl?

Faster than a speeding electronic paper cutter!

More powerful than multiple decoupage layers!

Able to leap tall DIY projects in a single bound!

Look!  Deep in the sales bin!

It’s an Artisan!

It’s a Negotiator!

No!  It’s “The Idea Momma”!

I’m a business woman by day – an avid project gal by night.  In between, I’m a mother of two daughters and a wife as well.  Saying my days are busy is a classic understatement.  I’m often running between work, gymnastics, school, soccer, PTA duties, parent conferences, and much more – just like every other family in America.  But I do find time to create.  I’m a graduate of UCLA with a Fine Arts degree so resourceful inspiration has always been a part of my life.  No matter how difficult my day can be, imagination has always served as a constructive diversion.

My goal is to bring this gratification to you in the easiest, most economical way possible.  Time and money are two commodities that we can’t afford to waste.  With such demanding and hectic schedules, most of us see only a small fraction of the day focused on our own needs.  In that small window of time, I’m going to help you cultivate your inner artist.

The “About Me” page is a fine line to dance upon.  What am I supposed to say?  Do I brag?  Do I go on and on to the point of self-exhaustion?  Do I attempt to dazzle and hope my humility guides me well?  Should I opt for the “plain Jane” route and stick to stories about my family?  To be honest, I’m the kind of woman that has one foot in each bucket:  I want to brag and show off my work; yet I also want to show how grounded I am.  I think highly of what I can do artistically, but I know there’s always more to learn.  Hopefully, I’ll teach and entertain with a lot of WOW attached!

Let’s start with a pictorial resume.  Here are a few of my most recent artistic endeavors.  Please leave comments and let me know what you think!  (P.S. Click on the individual picture for a larger image and greater detail.)

“Fall Foilage”

The first creation I’d like to show you is an art piece I created several months ago.  Our family room focuses on a brick fireplace with an entire wall of windows next to it.  The opposing wall sat empty for a long, long time.  I was a little intimidated by the fact every other wall has a wonderful feature.  I put my art background to work and created a fall scene full of color and texture.  Looking at the bigger picture, I knew I wanted to add a “Tiffany Blue” color to the room.  It appears in the painting’s sky as well as accent pillows across my furniture.  It isn’t a lot of blue, but it has a wonderful impact against the more subdued browns in our family room.

Momma Hint:  This isn’t the first painting to grace that wall.  I’ve had several.  Every room should have a “rotating spot”, where artwork is changed often.  It’s an easy way to keep the room fresh.

“Monkey Business”

My daughters both love gymnastics and we conveniently have a great gym right around the corner.  (Insert shameless plug for “Monkey Business Gymnastics”, 21092 Bake Parkway, Lake Forest, CA!)  I often chat with one of the two business owners, and she mentioned their interest in a Monkey Business mural in the gym.  “I’d love to see a small group of monkeys hiding in a couple of palm trees.”  Lynn knew exactly what she wanted!  What follows is my initial sketch for Lynn’s approval, and a three picture series of the project from beginning to completion.

The Monkey Business kids that come in for gymnastics LOVE the mural.  Several have taken pictures next to it.  I’m so overjoyed that I could add a little more flavor to a wonderful business.

“Tick Tock”

When my husband and I were expecting our first daughter, I faced the daunting – yet enjoyable – task of decorating her room.  Family and friends loved the decor of our home so the pressure was on to create something special.  I decided to build a clock, complete with whimsical numbers.  It was a big hit!  As my daughter grew up, the clocks matured as well.  What follows is the first clock I created, my second daughter’s clock, a peace themed clock, and my newest edition that hangs at the top of our stairwell.  As I would suggest to any artist, keep it fresh with subtle changes.

All That Jazz

The next piece is something I painted for my in-laws’ music room.  They wanted a jazzy, colorful project that would take up some wall space.  A singular canvas looked good, but the trio added visual interest and spread the art over a larger area.  This one was a blast to paint!

“The Bat”

Last, but not least, my husband is an enormous fan of The Batman.  He grew up reading the comics.  He writes creatively along the same character lines.  He has The Bat plastered all over his world (room, car, classroom – you name it).  He found a fantastic image that I replicated for him.  It hangs above the desk in his ManCave.  It’s entitled “Batman: Black and White”.  The second image is of a clock I made when we were dating (many, many moons ago).  It was one of my first efforts to impress him and endorse his obsession.  After 13 years of marriage, the clock served its purpose.

Decorating rooms, creating clocks, painting murals, reproducing Batman – my artwork goes in any direction.  That speaks volumes about me.  I don’t specialize in anything, but I’m great at a lot of things.  Why narrow your skills?  Attempt everything!  The worst that can happen is you dislike what you make.  Toss it, and try something else.  That’s the beauty of art.  Don’t measure yourself by your failures, just keep track of the successes.

I’m glad you’re here.  Get comfortable, and make yourself at home.  Hopefully you’ll find a helpful tip or two that serves you well.  Again, I encourage everyone to leave comments.  I’d love to hear from you!
